<br />
The holiday season is upon us yet again and I have to admit that I am sucker for any and all things festive and themed (especially for the holidays!) I almost always try to do something holiday related with my artwork, whether it be a simple sketch, a full painting, or this year (for the first time ever) a hand sculpted and painted holiday ornament!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-98AbBU4fHa8/UqzBdxQmInI/AAAAAAAAIPc/5pLgn1OtIvw/s1600/photo+8.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-98AbBU4fHa8/UqzBdxQmInI/AAAAAAAAIPc/5pLgn1OtIvw/s320/photo+8.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
As most of you know, I love to experiment and try new things with my artwork, so when the opportunity came up to be a part of the <a href="http://thinkspacegallery.com/shows/2013-12-project/" target="_blank">Deck The Halls</a> show with <a href="http://thinkspacegallery.com/" target="_blank">Thinkspace Gallery</a>, I jumped at the chance to try something I've never done before! Sculpting!<br />
<br />
I'm all about utilizing my resources when it comes to making art, so for this project I enlisted the help of my brilliantly talented friend, <a href="http://www.jenniecotterill.com/" target="_blank">Jennie Cotterill</a>. If you're not familiar with her work, do yourself a favor and check it out. She is a master of 2D art, 3D art and all other art in between. She introduced me to and showed me how to use <a href="http://www.magic-sculpt.com/" target="_blank">Magic Sculpt</a> to make my ornament. Once I learned the basics, I set off on my own and here is the process I took...<br />
<br />
The idea behind my ornament was to have my hummingdeer character flying out of a gingerbread birdhouse. I started by creating an armature (which is basically the skeleton of a sculpture) with craved foam, wire and masking tape. I used light weight materials to cut down on the heaviness of the ornament so it would hang easily without putting too much weight on a christmas tree branch. The frame for the birdhouse is a prefabricated basic wooden craft ornament that I modified and sculpted on top of. I also used a string of mini craft christmas lights and ribbon to finish it off.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yQYm8y5trrA/UqzBaFVRUnI/AAAAAAAAIO8/l6MbaqaXGzA/s1600/photo+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yQYm8y5trrA/UqzBaFVRUnI/AAAAAAAAIO8/l6MbaqaXGzA/s320/photo+1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Once I had the basic armature done I started layering the Magic Sculpt on top. If you're not familiar with Magic Sculpt, it is basically a putty type of epoxy clay that consists of two equal parts (resin and hardener) mixed together to activate it. Once mixed it has approximately a 3 hour working time from mixing to hardening and can be sanded, drilled or modified with carving tools after hardening. I sculpted in layers, letting the Magic Sculpt fully set between layers so that I wouldn't have to worry about trying to sculpt everything all at once.<br />
<span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><span style="line-height: 21.984375px;"><br /></span></span></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qEqiHHLdKak/UqzBYECWLsI/AAAAAAAAIOo/h-Zk5I3DkoE/s1600/photo+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qEqiHHLdKak/UqzBYECWLsI/AAAAAAAAIOo/h-Zk5I3DkoE/s320/photo+2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #111111; line-height: 21.984375px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sWcVFpu7EDo/UqzBYsyOUSI/AAAAAAAAIOs/lprf8KeYlws/s1600/photo+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sWcVFpu7EDo/UqzBYsyOUSI/AAAAAAAAIOs/lprf8KeYlws/s320/photo+3.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="background-color: white; color: #111111; line-height: 21.984375px;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><br /></span></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6jUayrFDhkA/UqzBZh2KyeI/AAAAAAAAIO4/xBk3-ZW7Ys4/s1600/photo+4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6jUayrFDhkA/UqzBZh2KyeI/AAAAAAAAIO4/xBk3-ZW7Ys4/s320/photo+4.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I decided to sculpt and paint the hummingdeer and gingerbread birdhouse separately to make it easier to work on small details and paint areas that would otherwise be hard to reach had they been attached. I made sure to leave grooves in the birdhouse where the hummingdeer's wings would rest so that there would be multiple spots to attach and secure it. After finishing the sculpt, I primed the entire thing with a few thin coats of gesso.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JonwRxiVnag/UqzBcpvSEBI/AAAAAAAAIPM/xaeYl9__aJI/s1600/photo+5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-JonwRxiVnag/UqzBcpvSEBI/AAAAAAAAIPM/xaeYl9__aJI/s320/photo+5.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After the gesso was dry I began to paint. Although I'd consider myself a fairly decent painter, I must confess that painting a 3D object is far more difficult for me than creating a 3D looking object on a flat surface.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9Jj5wccAKCo/UqzBbjIC0hI/AAAAAAAAIPE/3krEZtSpaTk/s1600/photo+6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9Jj5wccAKCo/UqzBbjIC0hI/AAAAAAAAIPE/3krEZtSpaTk/s320/photo+6.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-t_NgVuHvhyA/UqzBdMFCoVI/AAAAAAAAIPU/TAsC82l3Qw4/s1600/photo+7.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-t_NgVuHvhyA/UqzBdMFCoVI/AAAAAAAAIPU/TAsC82l3Qw4/s320/photo+7.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When both parts were painted and varnished, they were ready to be connected. I used more Magic Sculpt to adhere the base of the hummingdeer to the birdhouse and superglue to secure the wings into the grooves that I had left for that specific reason. I did some minor touch ups with paint and detail work to finish it off and voila! My very first sculpt was complete!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-98AbBU4fHa8/UqzBdxQmInI/AAAAAAAAIPc/5pLgn1OtIvw/s1600/photo+8.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-98AbBU4fHa8/UqzBdxQmInI/AAAAAAAAIPc/5pLgn1OtIvw/s320/photo+8.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was definitely way out of my element throughout this entire project and I can't say that I didn't have a few nightmares about it. But, I would have to say that overall I had a blast working on it and I'm very pleased with how it turned out! Will I sculpt again? Absolutely! I'd love to get better and refine my technique. That's what art is all about for me. Exploring uncharted territory and constantly learning new things! HUGE thanks again to my friend Jennie Cotterill for all of your help and encouragement! You're the best!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Happy Holidays everyone! Now go make some holiday art!</div>

This year has been a whirlwind of amazing changes and growth for me and I couldn't be more excited about it (although my head has felt like it was about to spin right off a few times!) If you are following me on any of my social networks then you've been right along for the ride and I hope you've enjoyed it! However, in all of the craziness, my poor blog was pushed to the back burner, but I'm pulling it up to the front and I will try to get better at keeping it up and sharing more in depth my processes and progresses with you guys because you are awesome and I wouldn't be who or where I am without you!<br />
<br />
Lately I've been in experimental mode and trying a lot of new things with my artwork because I feel that is the best way for an artist to learn and improve! One such experiment is this painting I just finished that I'm calling, "A Tiger Of A Different Stripe."<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-c32Nrl6HmgE/UnlXG-XFnmI/AAAAAAAAIJ0/W7qabWasQ88/s1600/ATigerOfADifferentStripe_.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-c32Nrl6HmgE/UnlXG-XFnmI/AAAAAAAAIJ0/W7qabWasQ88/s320/ATigerOfADifferentStripe_.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I've always loved the idea of flat, graphic imagery mixed with fully rendered, three dimensional imagery so I wanted to create a piece that compared the two side by side. As always, I started with a sketch. I split it down the middle, shading one side and leaving the other side simple line work. Once I finished the face, I overlaid some tracing paper to design her hair and other elements. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UuIik4jcNkQ/UnlWj-6sYcI/AAAAAAAAIJw/yPrYl56x1aA/s1600/1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UuIik4jcNkQ/UnlWj-6sYcI/AAAAAAAAIJw/yPrYl56x1aA/s320/1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EV1F92KSSRg/UnlWhbRDBtI/AAAAAAAAIJM/n0scUAshFn8/s1600/2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EV1F92KSSRg/UnlWhbRDBtI/AAAAAAAAIJM/n0scUAshFn8/s320/2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
After the general piece was figured out, I transferred the sketch to a surface to begin painting. (Please check out my earlier post about <a href="http://glennarthurart.blogspot.com/2012/10/transferring-sketch.html" target="_blank">transferring a sketch</a> to see how I do it.) I decided to work on <a href="http://www.ampersandart.com/gesso.html" target="_blank">gessobord</a> for this piece instead of a wood panel to achieve a solid flat look without the the natural wood grain that usually flows through my work. I started with the side that I wanted to look more realistic with depth and shading.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vFmSLFQIX2E/UnlWhYIE81I/AAAAAAAAIJE/ruV41vU2T5Q/s1600/3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vFmSLFQIX2E/UnlWhYIE81I/AAAAAAAAIJE/ruV41vU2T5Q/s320/3.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-g4IGvkpwtKw/UnlWh70bgEI/AAAAAAAAIJU/Nyxv2znBWqU/s1600/4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-g4IGvkpwtKw/UnlWh70bgEI/AAAAAAAAIJU/Nyxv2znBWqU/s320/4.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I then moved on to the side that would have the graphic feeling to it. Just for some visual fun, I decided to swap some imagery, placing graphic over rendered and vice versa.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jbQvZ4OfOzM/UnlWia5IGHI/AAAAAAAAIJc/abTwuPt0NGQ/s1600/5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jbQvZ4OfOzM/UnlWia5IGHI/AAAAAAAAIJc/abTwuPt0NGQ/s320/5.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QRcz_HVua5Y/UnlWi_jjE6I/AAAAAAAAIJk/P2HQ6U7K3HE/s1600/6.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QRcz_HVua5Y/UnlWi_jjE6I/AAAAAAAAIJk/P2HQ6U7K3HE/s320/6.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I loved the idea of using all things related to tigers for this piece because I felt like it all worked so well with what I was trying to visually create, so I used tiger lilies, tiger's eye beads, a tiger tattoo and of course little tiger striped hummingbirds. And thus, A Tiger Of A Different Stripe was born! The painting is 12"x12" acrylic on gessobord 2013.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Thanks for stopping by and I promise to post more and keep giving you guys a glimpse into my crazy little world. Enjoy! </div>

<br />
Between getting paintings ready for gallery shows and whatnot, I like to constantly squeeze in sketches and practice different types of art so my skills don't get rusty. When I do this, I usually just use art products that I already have hanging around so they won't go to waste. (I have a ton of Prismacolor products so I tend to use them the most for practicing. They're great quality and really versatile so they're perfect for this sort of thing!) Here is a piece I just finished using Prismacolor brand art markers and Prismacolor Verithin brand colored pencils on 8x10 bristol vellum paper.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LHRiT549WWo/UMOo3iJksfI/AAAAAAAAEuc/2geF6I6Imgc/s1600/marker+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LHRiT549WWo/UMOo3iJksfI/AAAAAAAAEuc/2geF6I6Imgc/s320/marker+copy.jpg" width="247" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I thought it would be fun to share my process on this piece because, like I always say, practice makes proficient! Although I consider this just a practice piece, I'm really happy with the way it turned out and can't wait to apply what I learned working on it to my show paintings.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I started with a base coat of marker. I used a lot of warm tones on this ones, layering from lighter to darker, building up values until I got to the point where I wanted to add in detail with colored pencil.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-t3kUKxIZjoM/UMOo5ZmDmwI/AAAAAAAAEuk/ICp8kluE7pk/s1600/photo+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-t3kUKxIZjoM/UMOo5ZmDmwI/AAAAAAAAEuk/ICp8kluE7pk/s320/photo+1.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I went in with colored pencil, using similar colors, to build up more values and soften out the edges left behind by the marker. I also added in a lot more detail to the hair and to her makeup.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hYA45kMy_no/UMOo66HZyvI/AAAAAAAAEus/El1UmwCfe7w/s1600/photo+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hYA45kMy_no/UMOo66HZyvI/AAAAAAAAEus/El1UmwCfe7w/s320/photo+2.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div>
Once I felt like she was refined enough, I went back in with marker to add in her collar and some more tattoo design to her chest. I followed the same procedure as before by adding some polishing details with colored pencil on top of the marker.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-M1pVVy8X2IU/UMOo84yyb_I/AAAAAAAAEu0/bmrJTTfzFW8/s1600/photo.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-M1pVVy8X2IU/UMOo84yyb_I/AAAAAAAAEu0/bmrJTTfzFW8/s320/photo.jpeg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That's about it. Hope you enjoyed my little practice piece of art and I encourage all of you to go make some practice art too! Have fun and don't forget... Practice Makes Proficient! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Love you guys!</div>

Hey guys...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've been getting a lot of questions about how I turn my sketches into full paintings. So I decided to make a step by step tutorial on my process. I use a transfer rub method using tracing paper. It can get a little tedious but I prefer it to using a projector because I feel like the transfer is a little more precise. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
STEP 1.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First I make sure that I have all the tools that I need to make a transfer sheet. To transfer this piece I'll be using the original sketch, a lightbox, tracing paper, a soft lead mechanical pencil, a hard lead drawing pencil, a blending stump and the prepped wood panel that I will be transferring the sketch to. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-khKNM66p_tE/UH30i_4zdHI/AAAAAAAAEgc/DCRZxj1ldGE/s1600/photo+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-khKNM66p_tE/UH30i_4zdHI/AAAAAAAAEgc/DCRZxj1ldGE/s320/photo+1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
STEP 2. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To make the transfer sheet I flip the original sketch (drawing side down) onto the light box, place a sheet of tracing paper over it and begin to trace. I like to use a mechanical pencil with a soft lead for this part for two reasons: a softer lead will transfer easier and a mechanical pencil will keep the line work consistent without having to sharpen it. When making the transfer sheet, I try to keep the lines as simple as possible to make the transfer clean and easy. When I'm done tracing I end up with a reversed, line drawing copy of the original sketch. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4-YWr6_4Nwc/UH30kBCgN9I/AAAAAAAAEgs/CvCKvfFpDEM/s1600/photo+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4-YWr6_4Nwc/UH30kBCgN9I/AAAAAAAAEgs/CvCKvfFpDEM/s320/photo+3.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
STEP 3.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once the tracing paper transfer sheet is made, I flip it back over (pencil side down) onto the wood panel. I secure it with masking tape to make sure that it doesn't slip or shift during the transfer. I use a blending stump to rub over the entire drawing to transfer the pencil lines onto the wood panel. When the transfer is finished, the lines left on the wood panel are usually somewhat faint and can wipe off fairly easy so I go over the entire drawing with a hard lead drawing pencil (I use a 4H) to secure the image.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7t6A5YY7j-o/UH30k9yccLI/AAAAAAAAEg0/EQEvQXKsyOc/s1600/photo+4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7t6A5YY7j-o/UH30k9yccLI/AAAAAAAAEg0/EQEvQXKsyOc/s320/photo+4.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
STEP 4.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now that the transfer is done, I clean up any lines or mistakes and then I'm ready to paint. I like to keep the original sketch nearby to use as a value study so I know where all of the shadows and highlights will be. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8HgVHD8sxkA/UH30jVJOX9I/AAAAAAAAEgk/irgFknR_hZs/s1600/photo+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8HgVHD8sxkA/UH30jVJOX9I/AAAAAAAAEgk/irgFknR_hZs/s320/photo+2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And that's about it. Thanks for stopping by and I hope this answered some of your questions. Keep in mind though, there are many ways to transfer a sketch to another surface to get it ready for paint. This is just the method I prefer. Take care everyone! Until next time!</div>

Of course, in my mind, anything related to the apocalypse means ZOMBIES! I jumped on the chance to be a part of this show and immediately set to work on a zombie themed painting and here's what I came up with.<br />

Thanks for stopping by!Glenn Arthurhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04067809234941185505noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4023600544640087841.post-88824656989872658102012-07-09T16:26:00.001-07:002012-07-09T16:26:56.498-07:00Adorned In SeductionHey guys!<br />
<br />
Remember doodling tattoos all over girls in magazine ads when you were a kid? Well I'm not sure about you, but I still love to do this! My amazing photographer friend, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/amykaplanphoto" target="_blank">Amy Kaplan</a>, shares the same love of decorating lovely ladies with tattoos so we've decided to take it to the next level. She brought me a gorgeous photo from a recent shoot she did and asked me to paint on top of it. Naturally the inner magazine doodling child in me loved the idea and this is what we came up with!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Adorned In Seduction - 8x10 acrylic on photograph 2012</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Glenn Arthur and Amy Kaplan</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KFJ0KSDULOY/T_ti8JGc35I/AAAAAAAAD8k/edRSu_tqhHY/s1600/AdornedInSeductionBlog.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KFJ0KSDULOY/T_ti8JGc35I/AAAAAAAAD8k/edRSu_tqhHY/s320/AdornedInSeductionBlog.jpeg" width="252" /></a></div>
<br />
Here are some process shots so you can see how I set about painting the tattoos on the actual photograph.<br />
<br />
When I received the photo from Amy, I threw a piece of tracing paper on top of it to design the tattoos and map out where I wanted to place them on the model.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XfOotzHnCwg/T_ti-PuBaUI/AAAAAAAAD88/9sisWzcvTJs/s1600/AdornedSketch.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XfOotzHnCwg/T_ti-PuBaUI/AAAAAAAAD88/9sisWzcvTJs/s320/AdornedSketch.jpg" width="265" /></a></div>
<br />
After I got that all figured out, I inked the design on the tracing paper to make sure the lines were crisp and clean. Then I broke out my trusty light box, layered the photo over the tracing paper design and began to paint directly on to the photograph.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PSEBi6Z1OzM/T_ti_1C-_cI/AAAAAAAAD9E/bst5AvBLZoY/s1600/AdornedTrace.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PSEBi6Z1OzM/T_ti_1C-_cI/AAAAAAAAD9E/bst5AvBLZoY/s320/AdornedTrace.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I used acrylic paint mixed with a small amount of acrylic ink to help the paint glide a little easier over the photograph. Ink alone did not give enough solid coverage and smeared too easy on the photo paper so the paint was a definite necessity! I also had to use a very tiny brush as the photo was only an 8x10 so some of the tattoo designs ended up being super little!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-x0qv8YkrSMI/T_ti9hh3L5I/AAAAAAAAD80/gVNw_GniWo8/s1600/AdornedSize.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-x0qv8YkrSMI/T_ti9hh3L5I/AAAAAAAAD80/gVNw_GniWo8/s320/AdornedSize.jpg" width="319" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-o9ij93uRgDc/T_ti8182mEI/AAAAAAAAD8s/MHpUH9dZj0c/s1600/AdornedPaint.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-o9ij93uRgDc/T_ti8182mEI/AAAAAAAAD8s/MHpUH9dZj0c/s320/AdornedPaint.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Amy and I are both so excited about the way the final piece turned out! And to make it even better, the piece will be on display at the <a href="http://www.rothick.com/" target="_blank">Rothick Art Haus</a> 3 year anniversary show opening <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/436017746443273/" target="_blank">Saturday, July 14th</a>!<br />
<br />
Hope to you guys there!Glenn Arthurhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04067809234941185505noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4023600544640087841.post-85291872208543442132012-06-25T11:47:00.001-07:002012-06-25T12:40:02.002-07:00Color Washed!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

It's time for more art! Allow me to introduce Color Washed! This is a new mixed media series that I've been experimenting with. Each image is done with acrylic paint, ink and colored pencil on bristol paper. I plan on adding more and more images to this series with different designs in the near future. In the meantime, here are the first four images. Enjoy! </div>

<br />
It's time to share some more art! I was recently invited to be in a show at <a href="http://www.thealternativecafe.com/shows.php" target="_blank">The Alternative Cafe</a> with a fun little steampunk theme called "Parasols and Dirigibles" opening on June 8th, 2012. I took this as a perfect opportunity to change things up a bit within my own my art style, so I to decided to put together a mini series of four paintings based off of the queens from a deck of playing cards.<br />
<br />
I didn't want them to look traditional so I threw my own twist on the ladies by painting their faces with the suit that each one represents. I adorned their heads in lilies with spade, heart, club, and diamond shaped stamen in place of crowns. I kept their hair and costumes in muted colors with designs, patches, my "G" key and of course hummingbirds to match their suits.<br />
<br />
Each queen is an 11x14, acrylic on wood painting 2012.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eP7ASF1iKQI/T8-c8JPUeuI/AAAAAAAAD4I/1HS7165e7E4/s1600/TheQueens.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eP7ASF1iKQI/T8-c8JPUeuI/AAAAAAAAD4I/1HS7165e7E4/s320/TheQueens.jpeg" width="252" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And here are some sketches and progress shots of each queen...</div>

Please contact <a href="http://www.thealternativecafe.com/shop.php" target="_blank">The Alternative Cafe</a> with any purchase inquiries. Prints of the queens will most likely be available once the show is closed through my website. Thanks for stopping by! <br />

<br />
I was recently invited by my super amazing friend, Jason Levesque, (a.k.a. <a href="http://thestuntkid.tumblr.com/" target="_blank">The Stuntkid</a>) to be a part of an awesome group exhibition at the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/VirginiaMOCA" target="_blank">Virginia Museum Of Contemporary Art</a>. The exhibit is called <a href="http://virginiamoca.org/i-soup" target="_blank">I Like Soup</a> and will be on display from May 26th - August 19th, 2012 during the museum's <a href="http://www.virginiamoca.org/andy-warhol-portraits" target="_blank">Andy Warhol: Portraits</a> exhibit as an artistic tribute to Mr. Warhol's famous Campbell's Soup Cans. And to top it all off, all proceeds from sales will help benefit MOCA's educational programs and the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia!<br />
<br />
I was extra excited to receive this invite, not only because I'd be showing along aside some of my favorite artist friends but I love any opportunity to have my work in a museum! This project was also super fun (and a little scary) because it meant working on a three dimensional object which is way outside of my comfort zone! Basically each artist received a blank soup can and had complete artistic freedom to decorate it. I decided to give my can a hand painted label with some pretty flowers and one of my hummingbirds bursting through the top and I labeled it "Hummingbird Nectar"<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hiAzrv9u2Kk/T72PLjPkOcI/AAAAAAAAD2Q/165cYDMSOa4/s1600/Soup.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hiAzrv9u2Kk/T72PLjPkOcI/AAAAAAAAD2Q/165cYDMSOa4/s320/Soup.jpeg" width="234" /></a></div>
<br />
Here are some progress shots of my can in production. First I measured out and designed the label and then began to paint.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BCfJMllef8c/T72PNBnRwxI/AAAAAAAAD2Y/n0b5_a5LedQ/s1600/Soup1.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="252" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BCfJMllef8c/T72PNBnRwxI/AAAAAAAAD2Y/n0b5_a5LedQ/s320/Soup1.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I constructed my bird from a styrofoam body that I glued feathers to and then painted. I dyed white silk flowers trying to keep the colors similar to those that Andy Warhol used to use in his portraits.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-E-dwFiSDNfQ/T72POTW0RPI/AAAAAAAAD2g/TXHvBOKycL0/s1600/Soup2.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="252" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-E-dwFiSDNfQ/T72POTW0RPI/AAAAAAAAD2g/TXHvBOKycL0/s320/Soup2.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I hadn't realized how small a soup can label is until it was laid out in front of me. It was definitely a challenge hand painting those letters especially since typography is something I almost never do!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-77y0_1r5m2s/T72PPvbYiwI/AAAAAAAAD2o/glV8DmyQceQ/s1600/Soup3.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="252" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-77y0_1r5m2s/T72PPvbYiwI/AAAAAAAAD2o/glV8DmyQceQ/s320/Soup3.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
After everything was varnished, it was so cool to get it glued on to the can as it really started to look like a legit Campbell's Soup label!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-v8-iYYjHyww/T72PRYkOmEI/AAAAAAAAD2w/riRDz6HPS0w/s1600/Soup4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="252" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-v8-iYYjHyww/T72PRYkOmEI/AAAAAAAAD2w/riRDz6HPS0w/s320/Soup4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Finally I glued in all of the flowers and the hummingbird and fixed the lid on the can to make it look as though the everything was bursting out of it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hiAzrv9u2Kk/T72PLjPkOcI/AAAAAAAAD2Q/165cYDMSOa4/s1600/Soup.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hiAzrv9u2Kk/T72PLjPkOcI/AAAAAAAAD2Q/165cYDMSOa4/s320/Soup.jpeg" width="234" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
So, if you guys are going to be in the Virginia Beach area between May 26th and August 19th, 2012 then I strongly urge that you check out this exhibit. I got to see some of the other artists cans in the show and they are AMAZING! Don't miss it!<br />
<br />

<br />
I just finished a new piece for an awesome group show curated by the super fantastic Josh Geiser of <a href="http://www.creepmachine.com/" target="_blank">Creep Machine</a>. The show is called "Marvelous Humans" and it will be on display at <a href="http://www.articulatedgallery.com/" target="_blank">Articulated Gallery</a> in San Francisco. Opening night is Saturday, April 7th 2012. I'm extra excited about this show as it is jam packed full of amazing artists and inspired by human oddities, body modification, sideshow freaks and all around human marvels!<br />
<br />
This is my piece for the show which is inspired by human pincushions and is titled "Pierced." It's 9"x12" acrylic paint and ink on watercolor paper 2012.<br />

</div><div class="MsoNormal">I know it’s been a while since my last post, and I apologize for being absent, but I have been in an all-consuming whirlwind of art projects and paintings lately that has been as exciting and fun as it has been exhausting! Yet somehow, in the midst of the madness, I’ve managed to start on some new stuff that I’m extremely excited about! I’ve been experimenting with going back to a more illustrative style, much like the ink and colored pencil style I worked in before I started painting, only this time I will be using paint! </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">For this new series of work I wanted to go back to the damask type background patterns that I used to use in my earlier work. Usually I would create a new pattern for each piece but I’ve decided that I want to have a more uniform feel to this series so each piece will adorn the same pattern just in different colors. People often ask me how I create my backgrounds so I snapped a couple pics during the process to show you.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">First I start by creating a basic design. I wanted a laceier look for this pattern with something personal to my work so I decided on roses and hummingbirds.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-i6w9dMikmN4/TriC5DFt8QI/AAAAAAAACco/oEEw0yn_clo/s1600/GA_WallpaperDesign.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-i6w9dMikmN4/TriC5DFt8QI/AAAAAAAACco/oEEw0yn_clo/s320/GA_WallpaperDesign.jpg" width="216" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Next I repeat the pattern by staggering the design using graph paper. I make sure to mark off points where the patterns need to line up so it will repeat properly.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kGkjGXLQ1P8/TriC6-KuoDI/AAAAAAAACc4/2XmzfjOLQS8/s1600/GA_WallpaperRepeat.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="231" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kGkjGXLQ1P8/TriC6-KuoDI/AAAAAAAACc4/2XmzfjOLQS8/s320/GA_WallpaperRepeat.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">After I get the pattern set and inked I trace it onto tracing paper. When that is done I flip the tracing paper (graphite side down) and rub the design onto the wood around the sketch. I like to use a softer lead when tracing because the graphite transfers easier. (I wanted this pattern to have a more stitched feel to it so I inked it with small lines before I started painting.)</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gwn0xyaM6is/TriC6O-MZYI/AAAAAAAACcs/6SMuPuRgneU/s1600/GA_WallpaperProgress.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-gwn0xyaM6is/TriC6O-MZYI/AAAAAAAACcs/6SMuPuRgneU/s320/GA_WallpaperProgress.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-e2xyNORwe70/TriC8qM1vFI/AAAAAAAACdA/MYKjuZW91SM/s1600/PatchedHeartsINK.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-e2xyNORwe70/TriC8qM1vFI/AAAAAAAACdA/MYKjuZW91SM/s320/PatchedHeartsINK.jpg" width="257" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Once the pattern is inked on the wood panel I start painting. With my backgrounds I always paint in light washes of color which helps to bring out the wood grain and also allows the inked design to show through.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UJPV2Y9wV4o/TriC4O50vPI/AAAAAAAACcg/BvnWPVBU7F8/s1600/PatchedHeartsPAINT.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UJPV2Y9wV4o/TriC4O50vPI/AAAAAAAACcg/BvnWPVBU7F8/s320/PatchedHeartsPAINT.jpg" width="253" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormal"><o:p><br />
</o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal">And then of course I finish the rest. This piece is titled “Patched Hearts Never Heal” and is 8”x10” acrylic on wood 2011. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WC_K5B1yUZs/TriC9qBq9JI/AAAAAAAACdI/MKbdx7SJ9jA/s1600/PatchedHeartsNeverHeal.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WC_K5B1yUZs/TriC9qBq9JI/AAAAAAAACdI/MKbdx7SJ9jA/s320/PatchedHeartsNeverHeal.jpg" width="254" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

<br />
So I just completed a painting titled "SheTakes Flight On A Loveless Zephyr" which I am extremely relieved to be done with. I'm absolutely thrilled with the way that it turned out, but this piece really tested my patience and challenged my creativity during the process.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">She Takes Flight On A Loveless Zephyr - 20x20 acrylic on wood 2011</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IVmJx-TbNTc/TkAmVrjoQ3I/AAAAAAAABOU/UuDTXzy7pc4/s1600/SheTakesFlightOnALovelessZephyr+copy.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IVmJx-TbNTc/TkAmVrjoQ3I/AAAAAAAABOU/UuDTXzy7pc4/s320/SheTakesFlightOnALovelessZephyr+copy.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
More often than not I plan out my paintings down to the last detail in sketch form before I even draw it on a wood panel. This helps me cut down on changes made and keeps the drawing nice and clean so it's ready for color. I started this piece the exact same way, however she had different plans in mind on how she would eventually end up.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LwZxVM9ldGI/TkAmNvwOt0I/AAAAAAAABOE/X74MdFcTa-U/s1600/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LwZxVM9ldGI/TkAmNvwOt0I/AAAAAAAABOE/X74MdFcTa-U/s320/1.jpg" width="311" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Once I got her drawn out on the wood panel I felt like there was something missing. I wanted her to have more elements of flight and surrealism so I added the wings to her hair and gave the hummingbird a little military type jacket.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-exfC27D9cCQ/TkAmOpGdugI/AAAAAAAABOI/FAe93WyU6_E/s1600/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="269" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-exfC27D9cCQ/TkAmOpGdugI/AAAAAAAABOI/FAe93WyU6_E/s320/2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div>As I work on a drawing for a painting I usually have a color scheme in mind so that it takes out a lot of the guess work once I finally begin to paint. I originally had cooler tones in mind for this piece but once again she had different plans in mind as warmer tones took over.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DsxRZJ2Yy7g/TkAmO14I6lI/AAAAAAAABOM/9T0uHlSDG1g/s1600/3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="258" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DsxRZJ2Yy7g/TkAmO14I6lI/AAAAAAAABOM/9T0uHlSDG1g/s320/3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
I started having difficulty with the wings behind her neck. I wanted them to have a mechanical feel to them but also wanted them to be uniform with the colors of the wings in her hair. There was a dynamic that was not happening with this idea so I decided to make them black for a nice contrast.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gNpUrWedeDU/TkAmVCk2J8I/AAAAAAAABOQ/ROQHx5XGCWk/s1600/4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="250" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gNpUrWedeDU/TkAmVCk2J8I/AAAAAAAABOQ/ROQHx5XGCWk/s320/4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
I really liked this idea as I had originally planned the background on this piece to be solid white. Yet again, she had different plans for this too. The white just wasn't doing it for me, so I decided to go for the opposite effect and black it out. Of course this meant the wings would get lost in the background so I painted them gold and finally called the piece finished!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IVmJx-TbNTc/TkAmVrjoQ3I/AAAAAAAABOU/UuDTXzy7pc4/s1600/SheTakesFlightOnALovelessZephyr+copy.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IVmJx-TbNTc/TkAmVrjoQ3I/AAAAAAAABOU/UuDTXzy7pc4/s320/SheTakesFlightOnALovelessZephyr+copy.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
At the end of it all I'm in love with this piece. The struggles and changes only make me appreciate it that much more. It's all part of the learning and growing process. She really helped me to not be so rigid and to give in to the creative process a bit more. Sometimes an idea can be perfect from the start and other times in has to be given time to evolve. And with this lesson learned it's time to move on to the next painting!<br />

<br />
I just finished my latest painting for my next show. I'm really loving the solid black backgrounds on these with the bits of gold trim. This piece is titled "Let Me Show You My Secrets" and is 18x24inches acrylic on wood 2011.<br />
<br />
I love to see how other artists work so I posted a couple of close up detail shots and progress pics in case you do too. Enjoy!<br />

He created a character called “The Last Vampire Astronaut” and compiled a group of artists to recreate her in their own style. I was honored to be considered a part of this phenomenal group! </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

In case you’re not familiar with them I implore you to check out their website. It’s full of incredibly inspiring time lapsed videos of some of the most amazing artists sketching, drawing, painting and just doing their thing!</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">I must admit I was a bit nervous about doing this. I tend to be my own worst critic, as I’m sure most of us are, but I couldn’t pass up this kind of opportunity! When I arrived at the studio I was greeted by the executive producer of Sketch Theatre, Lily, (who is as sweet and kind as she is gorgeous!) and she really made me feel welcome! I sat at a large desk with a huge camera hanging just overhead and a monitor to my right. I threw on my iPod and went to work. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dp1Jk8KNHWY/TajR_U6SViI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/qmmDlIdLhm0/s1600/SketchTheatre1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-dp1Jk8KNHWY/TajR_U6SViI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/qmmDlIdLhm0/s320/SketchTheatre1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">I sketched from start to finish for one hour which was a little strange for me as I tend to work on multiple projects at the same time switching back and forth. But once I got in the zone it was easier than I had originally thought. Watching myself draw in the monitor was kind of fun but after a while I completely forgot it was there. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MaZaE5ua1CM/TajR_H00aMI/AAAAAAAAAEM/yTW9zHaxdd0/s1600/SketchTheatre1-1.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MaZaE5ua1CM/TajR_H00aMI/AAAAAAAAAEM/yTW9zHaxdd0/s320/SketchTheatre1-1.PNG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="MsoNormal">When the video was finished it was even cooler than I thought it would be. Lily set the video to an awesome track by the Crocodiles which went so well with my drawing and she had such wonderful things to say about my work! I can’t express enough gratitude to Lily and everyone at Sketch Theatre for including me in this amazing art experience and I can’t wait to do it again! </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

It really forces you to step outside of your comfort zone and place complete trust in another individual that they will not only handle your work with love and care but add their own special brand of talent to help improve and expand the piece as a whole and vice versa.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #eeeeee; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #eeeeee; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span class="apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">My great friend, <a href="http://www.facebook.com/Robertomoralesart">Roberto Morales</a>, is a master of graphite and ink work in a beautifully twisted style that is all his own. His artwork is jam packed full of imagery that is not only macabre and bizarre but intricately detailed to perfection which is why I was so excited to combine our two artistic worlds! We agreed on an idea and set to work…<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #eeeeee; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #eeeeee; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span class="apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">The piece is titled “Peeling Back The Nightmares” which I started with acrylic paint on a 12x16 wood panel.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #eeeeee; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><br />

</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #eeeeee; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span class="apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">I handed off the piece to Roberto and he took over by adding his amazing work with graphite and ink.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #eeeeee; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span class="apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><br />

</o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #eeeeee; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span class="apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">The piece then found its way back into my hands as I finished off the rest with more paint and viola… a piece of art was born!<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #eeeeee; font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span class="apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><br />

Yeah, me too.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">And thus opens the door to the dangerous world of procrastination! </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Upon starting a career as a visual artist I would draw and paint at the speed of light meeting deadlines long before they were due only because I wasn’t sure just how long each project would take to finish. My drive was extremely strong, and still is, however I’ve now become more comfortable in my craft and understand my limits and capabilities within certain time restraints. I also find myself taking on a much heavier work load as I realize how much work I can complete faster than before. I’m a bit of a workaholic so multitasking projects is how I thrive. The only problem is the more skilled I become in a certain area the more I tend to procrastinate. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Now I can tell you from experience that procrastination is the type of practice that gives with one hand and takes away with the other. You get the instant gratification of relaxing, hanging out with friends, or watching just one more episode of your favorite show yet you have to deal with the consequences of stressing out, sacrificing sleep and rushing to complete a project on time. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">But this brings up the question, “Is procrastination really a bad thing if I’m still able to meet my deadlines?”</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">The answer is YES! It’s a known fact that stress is the cause of many physical and mental ailments and sleep deprivation, well we all know how messed up that can make you! Not to mention the fact that finishing projects at the last minute leaves no room for errors or revisions which can make or break you as a professional.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">So how does one keep from procrastinating? </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Times,"Times New Roman",serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><o:p></o:p>As for me the answer lies in keeping myself constantly challenged. The more I try my hand at new techniques or using new products I’m unfamiliar with the more I retain that original drive to get things done right away. If I’m not sure how long a project will take to finish I will generally get it done sooner than later in case I might hit an obstacle along the way. So if you’re having a problem with procrastinating then I challenge you to challenge yourself. Wade into uncharted territory and attack it at full force. You might be surprised at how ahead of the game you can get and you’ll be able to carve another notch in the old skill belt!</span><br />

As we grow older we come to realize that this idealistic dream is not quite as easy to live as once thought. But that begs the question, "What exactly <i>is</i> this American dream?" According to James Truslow Adams in 1931, the American dream meant that </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small; line-height: 19px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">"life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement"</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">That's all great and good but today there are so many standards that our society has set that are either completely outdated or near impossible to reach. We've put this "American Dream" on such a high pedestal that it's like scaling Mount Everest to get to it. Everything we do we have to justify in a way that it becomes one more stepping stone toward reaching this practically unattainable goal. But why are we in such a hurry to live a dream that others have created for us? And will it really bring happiness to achieve it?</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><br />
</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Well I propose a new dream to live. Your own dream! Break the mold of these old fashioned ideals. Design your own standards of living regardless of society's ridiculous norms. Create goals that are unique to yourself and set out to achieve them in only a way that you can. Don't let yourself be discouraged by obstacles that you may have to overcome along the way and always make sure you learn from any mistakes made. Be completely true to yourself and when someone asks you how you're doing today, you can look at them and say, "I'm living the dream! My dream!"</span><br />
